Sperryville, Castleton, Washington, Flint Hill and other companies patrolled the roads, urging residents in low-lying areas to leave before the water rose and cut off their escape routes.
Sheriff John Henry Woodward reported two water rescues by county volunteers, both in the Laurel Mills area. One driver was rescued from a car stuck in high water on Route 729, and another car and several people were pulled from the rising water on Route 618. No one was injured.
Among the roads flooded were U.S. 211 west of Sperryville, Route 618 in Castleton, where the water covered the road for about 100 yards, and portions of all the roads in Old Hollow, Gid Brown Hollow and Harris Hollow.
The only serious damage to structures was in Harris Hollow, where the back basement wall of the Roy family’s home collapsed into the basement under the weight of the rain-soaked earth behind it. The family was evacuated, and according to Social Services workers, is requesting the community’s assistance to help clean out the basement and rebuild the foundation.
County emergency services coordinator Dieter Knuepfer estimated damage to the Roy’s home at about $55,000.
