In his “Letter to the editor” of Oct. 4, Lee Bird, among other points made, suggested two things: that defense spending of almost $300 billion a year under the Reagan administration simply added substantially to the national debt while Social Security and related health entitlements not only paid their way but showed a profit.
He mentioned that under President Carter defense spending was only $100 billion a year. Democrats have a convenient way of forgetting facts they do not like while spotlighting in a distorted way those they do. For example:
