The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR, met on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Madison United Methodist Church for a luncheon meeting with Mrs. W. Carlyle Crigler and Mrs. Kenneth T. Delavigne as hostesses.
Mrs. Thomas Eastham introduced the speaker of the afternoon, Mrs. Robert S. Lewis, a member of the DAR State Speakers Staff, whose subject was: “The Lady Camp Followers of the Revolutionary War.” Women were all around the battlefields and from all walks of life — daring, astute, ingenious and determined participants adapting to any situation. They were likened to the USO and the Red Cross; visiting hospitals and comforting and caring for the wounded; visiting dungeons with food for the captives; growing gram and preparing food for families and prisoners; spying on the British and stealing their supplies; burying the dead after battles. Mrs. Lewis named numerous individuals with their contributions to the war effort, all patriotic, brave and fearless.
