She said things have changed for young women and blacks since 1965. “There are more opportunities, and that’s the good news.”
But, she added, there are also disadvantages for today’s teens. “There are things we were sheltered from,” she said. “The divorce rate was not as high. Fewer women worked, so there was more family stability. We didn’t have cable TV. The basic ways we got in trouble were driving too fast, and some of my classmates didn’t make it, and drinking beer. There was no marijuana or other drugs.”
“There is not an adult in this room who knows what it is like to look at the world the way you do,” she added.
