Benefit Fire Hall dance
The rock 'n' roll band Venus Jones will perform at a Washington Fire Hall dance, 9 p.m.-l a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The cost is $8 per person, $15 per couple. A portion of proceeds will benefit the fire department.
The alcohol policy is BYOB for those over 21.
Feast Fantastic at 4-H Center
Area chefs will showcase their culinary talents with such offerings as soft shell crab, prime rib and barbecued ribs at the Shenandoah Feast Fantastic at the 4-H Educational Center on U.S. 522 between Chester Gap and Front Royal, noon-8 p.m. Aug. 24.
Hot-air balloon rides, hiking and swimming are among the other planned activities.
Live music will also be provided.
Admission to the grounds is $3, and generous portions of the chef's creations will be available at no more than $3 each. Children 12 and under get in free.
Proceeds benefit the YES Camp and Camp Fantastic.

Library hosts him festival
Relieve the summer doldrums by attending the Davenport Film Festival, starting 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Rappahannock Library.
Davenport Films, based in Delaplane, produces action adaptations of folk tales and fairy tales. The library was given the films featured in this series by Jake and Elizabeth Jones.
The festival starts at 1:30 p.m. with "Soldier Jack," adapted from an Appalachian Jack tale. It continues at 2:15 p.m. with "Jack and the Dentist's Daughter," adapted from the Brothers Grimm's "The Master Thief."
"Ashpet," a live-action rural retelling of "Cinderella," follows at 3 p.m., and the afternoon wraps up with "Thoughts on FoxHunting," at 3:45 p.m.
