Assistant superintendent Robert Chappell also briefed the board on one of his new duties: the transportation department. He said some routes were being redrawn, and that the county garage mechanic now has some new duties.
Mr. Chappell said drivers were being encouraged to use other school system transportation when possible. He said all county school bus drivers will be required to maintain a commercial driver’s license starting March 1992. Most of them already have one, he noted.
Bus routes will run in next week’s edition of the Rappahannock News.
Dr. Gangel informed the board that he and building principals will be involved in training new staff and preparing the schools for the chil. dren. Attendance is difficult to project, he said, but indications were . that it could be higher than last year’s average daily enrollment of 945.
“Generally speaking, things are going very well,” said Dr. Gangel. “We’re on schedule.”
In other School Board business Tuesday night, the board:
• Voted to approve a funding plan for the annual 7th grade trip, under which students would be expected to pay half the cost, or $125, and the rest will be paid for through fundraisers.
• Added the $40,900 from the Board of Supervisors to, pay for a new storage tank at Rappahannock Elementary. The new tank will probably be completely installed by the first day of classes.
