set straight
To the Editor:
The First Amendment’s Freedom of Speech provision has been so misinterpreted by the Supreme Court that it’s time that the record be set straight and that inept body be put out to pasture forever.
Freedom of speech is an individual citizen’s right which cannot be assigned to a group entity for any purpose whatsoever. This serves as the check on government and business to stop any abuses.
A citizen running for public office, for example, can publish his superiority over an incumbent, whereas that incumbent wouldn’t be permitted to publish anything because he represents government.
In this way the public can set the agenda for government that it must carry out, and representatives must stand on their record. Business would also not be able to set the agenda using lobbyists.
Also, speech means just that, not garbaged to include bumping bimbos for bucks. This letter is my speech in print, but will this newspaper publish it when their opinions have legitimized slavery?
