Rappahannock County septic tank owners — a group that includes nearly every property owner in the county — may encounter problems in the near future.
Before July 1, septic tank pumpers from surrounding counties pumped septage in this county and returned to their own county to either have the material treated in another sewage system or spread upon fields.
As of July 1, the practice of spreading the spetic tank effluent on agricultural areas is illegal, therefore causing all septage to be treated in sewage treatment plants reducing the substance to sludge which, in best form, is land-applicable.
Sewage treatment plants work on a delicate system of organics and balance. Intensive septage dumping at a sewage treatment causes imbalance, a costly and unproductive action.
