Mr. Morehouse also used the occasion to delve deeper into the question of what the town will do with the old library building on Gay Street, now the “new” Town Hall.
Because it was designed as a church and a meeting house, he said, it should be redesigned that way. The Town Hall ought to house the town’s financial records and other archival data, he told the council.
He asked the council to grant up to $2,500 to do professional planning for the interior. He also wants to donate a facade easement to the state or federal government, as well as obtain a historical marker for the former Presbyterian Church.
He would “possibly” name the structure after Clyde Bagley, who was active in towrn affairs at the turn of the 20th Century.
The motion also established a five-member committee to oversee the renovations, authorized the committee to obtain the old benches if possible, and do title work on the structure — if needed. It passed 4-2.
Council member New'bill Miller asked the mayor to hold off on spending the $2,500 until the committee could determine how much volunteer help on the project can be found.
