Bowing to pressure from Virginia’s Congressional delegation, Superintendent J.W. Wade has decided to leave the entire Skyline Drive open this winter and spring.
Instead of closing two thirds of the Drive for six months he will close Mathews Arm Campground for the entire year, keep the historic Camp Hoover conference center closed, delay opening the campground at Big Meadow's and cut back maintenance, interpretive programs and staffing.
“Money is simply unavailable to maintain the full range of services and facilities that have been traditionally offered at Shenandoah National Park,” he said.
National Park Service director James Ridenour said, “Our obligation is clear in this time of fiscal limits - wre must first protect park resources and then provide for visitor access and enjoyment of those resources.”
“We have made every effort to minimize effects on the visiting public, but some changes are necessary in major parks like Shenandoah if we are to meet our responsibility to assure healthy parks in the 2ist century,” he said.
