Last week’s heavy rains also played havoc with the basketball schedule. The home opener against Brentsville had to be postponed until Saturday, Jan. 16. As a result the varsity and J.V. teams opened their seasons at Luray last Saturday.
J.V. coach Tim Corder was pleased with his squad, which cruised to an easy win, 76-41, behind 29 points from Andre Fletcher, who also had five assists and four steals.
After three quarters Rappahannock was comfortably ahead by 4932. The fourth quarter turned into a blowout as the Panthers outscored Luray 27-9.
When John Butler twisted his ankle in the second period, Jeff Holder came off the bench to score 14 points, Corder said. Raymond Williams scored 10 points and Derek Daczewitz grabbed nine rebounds, he added.
Filling in at guard, Tim O’Meara really helped the team with seven assists, Corder added.
If coach Corder was pleased with his opening game, varsity coach Gary Leake was not. “We led by two points at the end of the first quarter and were down by only one point at the half, and then we basically fell apart in the second half,” he said. The Panthers finally lost the game 55-68.
