The personal popularity of Charles Robb certainly helped Wilder when he ran for lieutenant governor, but almost immediately he gave Robb the back of his hand and has engaged in a running feud with him ever since. He has largely ignored Gerald Baliles, his predecessor as governor, and some of his key supporters have blamed Baliles for the fiscal troubles inherited by Wilder.
