Social Security developed both booklets in cooperation with the IRS and the U.S. Department of Labor and is distributing them through a combined outreach effort with the United Farm Workers. Limited copies are available from the Culpeper Social Security office.
Every year, Social Security encounters problems reporting the wages of thousands of farm workers because employer reports contain inaccurate or incomplete information or because wage reporting doesn’t occur at all.
Often, the problems are not uncovered until someone is filing for benefits. Then, the claim can be delayed or benefit payments will be less than they could be.
The worst case is when workers learn they aren’t entitled to any benefits after years of unreported work and unpaid Social Security taxes.
