“If you are a fanner or a farm employee, Social Security has two publications that you should know about,” says Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper.
‘They clarify the wage-reporting responsibilities that employers of farmworkers have under Social Security and other programs of the Federal Government and stress to farmworkers the importance of checking the accuracy of their wage records."
The first publication is “A Guide to Social Security for Farmers, Growers, and Crew Leaders” (Publication number 05-10025). It tells agricultural owners and contractors of farm labor how to report their employee’s earnings and their own earnings to the government and explains the importance of accurate reporting.
The second is “If You are a Farm Worker” (Publication number 0510074). It explains that employers have a responsibility to withhold Social Security taxes from the workers’ pay, match the amount that they withhold, and send the combined tax payments to Social Security and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
