BERRYVILLE — Since Nov. 7, the only thing that has come out of the sinkhole growing off Route 672 in Clarke County is a lawsuit.
Dale and Susan Bartles are suing their insurance company and their insurance agent for $150,000 on grounds of misleading information and bad faith.
The sinkhole that abruptly appeared under the Bartleses’ basement Nov. 7, finally engulfed the house last Saturday.
The sinkhole first devoured the basement floor, the furnace, and chimney. Slowly, it ate its way under the foundation, and finally the entire house collapsed into it. The rain and snow last week apparently completed the wreck.
The only thing left standing is an addition that was built on the 40year-old home in 1986.
County building inspector Don MacDanel said the addition has not caved in because it is on different footers and not connected to the basement walls. However, MacDanel is convinced that pressure will cause it to fall into the hole as well.
