Let's open our hearts
Every year at this time the Rappahannock County Social Services Department collects non-perishable foods and financial contributions to make baskets for needy Rappahannock families.
Last year the department filled and distributed 60 baskets. The need is greater this year and Office Manager Marie Davis would like to prepare at least 65 baskets for this holiday season.
Cash contributions are especially appreciated by the Social Services staff. The money is used to buy gift certificates so that those in need can get perishable goods and toys for children. The gift certificates also allow those with special dietary needs to get the foods they need.
Now that a new administration has been elected, the news media are full of stories about the improving economy. Here in Rappahannock County our unemployment has dropped to 5.2 percent according to figures provided by the state.
But unemployment statistics and upbeat economic stories do not tell the whole story. Dozens of families in this county desperately need our help. It is easy to spend $20 on some soda pop, chips and dip. If only 50 families sent that same $20 to Marie Davis, she would have an additional $1,000 to help make Christmas a little less harsh for the unfortunate among us.
