The Forest Servicethe public to comment on planned treatments to suppress gypsy moth populations next year on the George Washington National Forest.
“Recent egg mass surveys indicate potential for severe defoliation in some areas of the George Washington National Forest next spring," said Jeff Witcosky, Forest Entomologist. “The gypsy moth is going to be with us from now on.”
To date, the forest has experienced at least one defoliation on about 40 percent of the forest and mortality on approximately 56,000 acres. Last year, gypsy moth caterpillars defoliated about 94,000 acres.
The agency is considering two different type treatments.
The first is aerial application of insecticide in the spring in 15 different areas totaling 0,614 acres.
The biological insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), and the insect growth regulator insectidide, • diflubenzuron (trade name, Dimilin), are being considered for use.
The George Washington National Forest is considering treatment of six recreation areas to protect them from severe defoliation .and possible tree mortality; prevent a decrease in recreation use due to nuisance and loss of shade; and re. duce the chance that visitors will ac'cidentally pick-up and transport • gypsy moths or their eggs to other I forested areas or back to their •homes.
The six recreation areas are .100 lacres at Sherando Lake in Augusta •County, Va.; 800 acres at Elizabeth ’furnace, 105 acres at Little Fort
