The park’s problems are tied di-,’ rectly to money. This year’s budget’ of $7 million is $200,000 less than last year’s and within the reduced bud-i get Wade must provide for $100,000 in mandated raises for staff.
His budget is thus $300,000 less than last year’s and something has to be cut somewhere.
In order to balance his budget Wade proposed last month to close the northern and southern sections of the Drive for six months, from Dec. 1, 1992, until June 1, 1993. That proposal aroused a storm of protest, especially from merchants in Front Royal. They were joined by merchants in Waynesboro and Charlottesville, who see the Skyline Drive as one of several attractions that draw tourists to their communities.
Rep. Frank Wolf led the charge against the Park Service. When Wade’s latest announcement was made. Wolf responded, “I am very pleased the Park Service will keep the road open year round and has opted to exercise alternative costcutting measures to address its current budget shortfall.”
