Susan Bartles said Tuesday that she didn’t want to sue the company, but it left them no choice, she said. When the hole was discovered, they left the house with, literally, only the clothes on their backs. MacDanel later reentered the house and salvaged a few keepsakes, but most of the Bartles’ possessions ended up deep in the hole.
Another concern is that the sinkhole continues to grow. It has crept past the Bartles’ property line and into a field owned by neighbor Keith Seekford. Now, concern has spread about the safety of the nearby secondary road.
Randy Kiser, resident engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Tuesday that the road has not shown any signs of depression such as cracking. The hole is 30 to 35 feet from the road. Kiser said the front yard would have to disappear before it would affect the road.
