might have been able to make. And now he and Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, who wants to succeed him as governor, are engaged in a public war of words about whether Wilder has acted as a proper steward of the state’s pension fluid.
During his tenure Wilder’s first press secretary quit because she thought he was being too vindictive in his dealings with others and there are reports that he and his chief of staff are barely on speaking terms these days.
But though Wilder has never hesitated to speak his mind even if it means apublic scolding of fellow Democrats, that won’t matter much if 20 or 30 years down the road dispassionate historians upon reflection conclude that his leadership kept intact the state’s fiscal integrity at a time when things may have been even worse than they seemed on the surface.
