Mike Massie took over as chairman of the county Planning Commission and Sharon Pierce was elected as vice chairman at last Wednesday’s meeting.
The planners also recommended approval for a new bed and breakfast in Laurel Mills.
The other two agenda items, adoption of the plan for the General Commercial District and acting on a special exception to clean up soil and water contaminated by underground fuel tanks formerly at the F.T. Valley Grocery, were continued for action in February.
At the beginning of the meeting former chairman Allen Stokes, who represents Piedmont District, said, “I wish to step aside.” He nominated Mike Massie, who represents the Board of Supervisors on the commission, to be the new chairman, and Mr. Massie was elected unanimously. 7
When next the planners took up the nomination for vice chairman, Jackson District representative David Fannon said, “I also wish to step aside. It’s time for some young blood.” He nominated Sharon Pierce, Stonewall-Hawthom District representative, who was not present. Her nomination was approved 5 to 1 with Werner Krebser voting “no.”
