New Label Format i
The January 1993 labeling regulations require food manufacturers to include a new label format and a uniform list of nutrients on their products. This includes: calories, total fat as well as saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate as well as dietary fiber, sugars and protein.
The nutrition information will be listed in grams or ihilligrams along with a Percent E)aily Value. The percent daily value is a new label reference number that shows how a food fits in a 2,000 calorie reference diet.
Vitamins and minerals will be listed only as a percent daily value, which replaces the percent U.S. RDAs.
Some labels will include a footnote at the bottom with the daily values for 2,000 and 2,500 calorie reference drets. The footnote will be the same on all nutrition labels.
Right now you will see both the old labels and some new labels on food products in the grocery stores as manufacturers switch over to the new labels. Remember the deadlines for new labels: Mary 1994 for FDAregulated food products and July 1994 for FSIS-regulated food products.
