Food labeling authority in the • United States is Shared by two federal agencies, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The FSIS regulates the labeling of meat and poultry products, while the FDA regulates the labeling of virtually all other food products and the ingredients that are added to food.
Labeling Changes
The January 1993 food labeling regulations provide consumers with the information they need to make informed food choices. The new regulations accomplish the following:
