Mrs. Turman said the hottest part of the fire was aparently in the kitchen where there was a wood stove.
Ms. Keys only learned of the fire when she was heading home later in the day. Mrs. Turman said she understands how Ms. Keys feels since the Turmans also had a fire several years ago that burned down their house while they were away.
Ms. Keys occasionally works at the F.T. Valley grocery, and people have been leaving things there for her. There is also a jar collecting money to help out.
Mrs. Turman said that renters should know they need “renters’ insurance” which is not very expensive.
Richie Burke, a member of the Sperryville Fire Department, responded to both fires. “The houses were both on the ground before we could get there,” he said.
