Newbill Miller, a former chairman of the commission, who served with Mr. Stokes for many years, asked him how long he had served as chairman. Mr. Stokes said he really didn’t know.

The planners recommended that the Board of Zoning Appeals grant a special use permit for contract purchasers Amanda Stephens and Gary Light of Arlington to operate a fourroom bed and breakfast at Laurel Mills Farm.

Mr. Light said, “It’s a big house. Otherwise we couldn’t keep and maintain it.”

County Administrator John McCarthy said that he had received verbal correspondence on the application from Phil Irwin, who operates Caledonia Farm Bed and Breakfast. Mr. Irwin was unable to attend the meeting because of the weather.

According to Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Irwin said there are currently are 13 bed and breakfast operations in the county and three country inns. “The county has become inundated with B and Bs. They should be told they probably won’t have any guests,” Mr. McCarthy reported Mr. Irwin had said.
