Another seed that is frequently put out is thistle. This is a particular favorite of Goldfinches, and they will almost surely find a tube feeder or a fine mesh bag filled with thistle.
Suet or other fats are great energy producers and are especially like by Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Wrens, Titmice, and Chickadees. Congealed bacon fat can be mixed with a little seed and smeared on the rough bark of a nearby tree. Or bacon fat can be mixed with commeal, bird seed, and a small smount of peanut butter to form tasty cakes of high calorie food.
Some unusual appearances at feeding stations during the past few days have included Tree Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and a group of three Winter Wrens. Edna also reports seeing a very large flock of Robins in a field near Sperryville. A bird not spotted so far is the Evening Grosbeak, even though conditions are just right for its appearance. Any sighting of this bird should be reported to Edna immediately.
