Susan Eaton Warren’s threestory house in Sperryville burned to the ground last Thursday night. She did not have insurance.
“I had been worried for a long time about not having insurance, but I just didn’t have the money,” she said. Unfortunately, now it is too late. Everything she owned, except for her truck, perished in the fire.
“It was everything I had worked my whole life for,” she said.
Mrs. Warren was employed for 20 years as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines, and saved money during that time to build her own house. She contracted out part of the work on her house, but built most of it herself. 1
All that is left standing now is the stone chimney, though badly damaged, and the cinder block foundation.
The fire apparently started as a chimney fire. Mrs. Warren said, “The first hint we had of it was that all the lights went out. Then I smelled smoke.”
She and her husband Wayne were in the house at the time, and they had a very difficult and scary time getting out, especially with no lights.
