Students returned to school Tuesday for only the fifth day of school since the Christmas holiday to learn that first semester exams have been canceled.
So far this year, students have missed 12 days of school, most since Christmas. School Superintendent David Gangel said it had been “a veiy unusual situation, not only in the number of days missed but also in when they were missed, very near , the time for mid-tehp exams. ”
He said it would take at least four days to prepare students for exam^ and another four days to give the exams. “Since we were behind, we felt we should put the time into instruction instead of into testing,” he said.
He said spring exams would be given as usual.
High school Principal John Toth heartily endorsed the decision to get along with instruction instead of exams. “Instruction is what we are about,” he said. “It took priority over testing.”
If there are no more missed days the third six-weeks period will end on FebJ 7 and parent-teacher conferences will be Feb. 10. i He said he had also decided to extend the school year by one week,
