We have to wonder about those numbers. Are they based on hard data, or massaged to support Gov. Allen’s Disney campaign? His boosterism has gone beyond what even Disney asked for, including worker training and even a promotional campaign.
There’s yet another concern about the governor’s plan. •Though some enthusiastic legislators have called the Disney proposal a “no-brainer,” there’s no guarantee that it will be the runaway success its backers assume.
If the project fails, or for any reason doesn’t produce the projected tax revenues, Virginia’s taxpayers will be left with the liability for the $142 million in bonds ($245 million including interest over 20 years). That’s a huge obligation for a new governor to foist on the Commonwealth’s residents.
The Disney project is, according to one company official, “the single largest one-time investment” in the state’s history. Such a huge investment deserves a careful look from the officials elected to represent us.
Their duty is to the state’s residents, not to Gov. Allen or the Walt Disney Co. A thorough independent analysis of the project, and public hearings, are warranted before a penny of state money is obligated to finance the Disney project.
