The internationally acclaimed Castle Trio will be joined by three renowned guest performers in a concert of music by Beethoven and Schubert at The Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.
The concert is the fourth in this season’s “Smithsonian at Little Washington” series. The concert will include the Serenade in D Major, Op. 25 by Ludwig van Beethoven and the Quintet in A Major, D667, the “Trout,” by Franz Schubert.
Kenneth Slowik, director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society, will be joined by several of his colleagues in a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m. to discuss pianos, strings, and flutes of Beethoven and Schubert’s time.
The Castle Trio, Lambert Orkis, fortepiano, Marilyn McDonald, violin and Kennth Slowik, violoncello, is trio-in-residence at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Since 1983 its concerts and recordings on instruments from the museum’s renowned collection have won praise from both classical music audiences and critics.
Mr. Orkis, is widely acclaimed as a performer on historical keyboard instruments and as a chamber musician. He performs recitals worldwide with celist Mstislav Rostropovich and with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. He is currently Principal Keyboard of the National Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. McDonald has toured worldwide as a member of the Castleton Trio, the Smithsonian String Quartet and the Oberiin Ensemble. She has appeared as solist with the Milwaukee Symphony.
