Donald Gore, president of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, saw a notice about the J.C. Penny awards in the Rappahannock New8 and decided to nominate Chris Payne. “He’s a fine upstanding young gentleman and very active in the rescue squad,” Mr. Gore said. “You can depend on him. He will do things when he is not asked because he sees the need.”
Mr. Payne said he was surprised to win the recognition. He didn’t even know he had been nominated until after the nomination period was finished. He went to Arlie conference center last Tuesday knowing he was a finalist, but not knowing he was a winner. As a winner in Northern Virginia he is automatically entered in the national J.C. Penney Golden Rule Awards with a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship and another $5,000 for the rescue squad.
What began as an opportunity to be of service has become a career goal for Mr. Payne. While he was still in high school he took training as an emergency medical technician so he could help in the rescue squad. He graduated from Rappahannock County High School last year and is
