Certified nurse-midwife Kathleen McClelland will join Dr. Matt Werner's private practice of obstetrics and gynecology in mid May. She will also work at the maternity clinic at the Culpeper County Health Department.
A registered nurse who has completed a post-graduate program in midwifery and passed a national certification program, a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a primary care provider for normal maternity, newborn, and well-woman gynecological care.
McClelland has a wide range of experience as a nurse, a family nurse practitioner, and a nurse midwife. After completing her bachelor's in nursing from Kent Stale University, McClelland worked for two years as staff nurse at University of Virginia Hospital.
As part of the family nurse practitioner (FNP) program at UVa, McClelland did a four-month intership with the Indian Health Service in White Earth, Minnesota. After completing the FNP program, she worked on the White Earth Indian reservation for three years and focused on pregnancy, newborn and well-woman care.
McClelland returned to Washington, DC, in 1983 and worked as a staff nurse in the labor and delivery unit at George Washington University and then as a FNP in the Student Health Service at Gallaudct University. For seven years, McClelland's primary care for deaf adolescents and young adults emphasized responsible sexual practices and general well-woman health care. McClelland found that she missed being with women as their primary care provider for pregnancy, labor and birth. In 1991 she received her master's in nursing from Georgetown University and passed the certification exam of the American College of Nurse Midwives.
