When you come home and your electronic clock is blinking, it can be a great inconvenience.
You may not realize, however, that your clock is probably reacting to a phenomenon known as the "momentary outage"—which actually helps prevent greater inconvenience.
Although momentary outages have always been a part of your power system's service, you may be more aware of them today because of modern appliances' sensitivity to even the slightest variation in power supply. Just a second's interruption is enough to make them blink.
Momentary outages can be annoying, but they serve a valuable purpose. They help temporarily break the circuit when a problem occurs, such as when tree branches brush against electric lines. The momentary interruption allows the problem to clear, and the overall power supply is not subjected to major damage. This helps prevent longer outages.
For many years, these beneficial momentary outages went completely unnoticed by most customers. But today's high tech appliances just don't miss a beat. They frequently react to a dip in the power that lasts only one second or so.
To help eliminate this inconvenience, many home electronics now available offer built-in batteries. If a short interruption occurs, the battery takes over and keeps your device in operation.
