Virginia’s former governor, Douglas Wilder, is considering a run for the United State’s Senate this November as an Independent. If he does so, he will be running against a Republican nominee to be chosen in a convention on June 4 and a nominee Chosen by the Democratic voters in a primary election on June 14.
A Democrat can hardly win in Virginia without the support of the African-American voters. Justly proud of Wilder’s record in office and of the fact that he was the first African-American ever elected governor in the United States. Many black Virginians would probably vote for him againist the Democratic nominee. Since it will be almost impossible for Wilder himself to win against the official Republican and Democratic nominees, this could result in the election of Oliver North, who is leading in the Republican polls.
Wilder was elected on the Democratic ticket five times to the State Senate and as lieutenant governor and governor. Many voted for him for his record and his qualifications, but others undoubtedly voted for him simply because he was the Democratic nominee.
It would be a sad ending to his political career for Wilder to run against the nominee chosen by thousands of Democrats who had voted for him for governor in 1985 and throw the election to the likes of Oliver North.
