The students arrive in the U.S. with their own health insurance and spending money. The host family is expected to treat the student just like their own children, providing them with meals, and lots of love and understanding. “The most important thing in their life is having a loving family. If you treat them as a member of your own family, they will be happy and adjust; they become comfortable with you and feel loved. They come to you for advice like your own kids do,” said Mrs. McNear.
She says that it is not necessary for a host family to feel they have to take the student on extravagant trips. One of her previous student’s favorite things to do here was to jump in the Thornton River wearing cutoffs. Or they might want to go to the mall. “They love to get a taste of the American life. They want to participate and be included the way your own kids are,” she said.

own. If a family does have children, it is not important that they be close in age to the foreign student, either. Her daughter Laura was six years old when the McNears hosted their first student, and everyone got along splendidly.
Among her many responsibilities as the area representative, Mrs. McNear will recruit, screen and select host families for placement of foreign students.
