Those of us who cannot carry a song in a bucket are eternally envious of those who can sing well. This quartet left me envious.
Steve Cramer has a powerful baritone voice that can fill the building—any building. Rosa Lamoreaux adds her critically acclaimed operatic voice to the mix.; opening the show with a love song and stopping it with We’ll Gather Lilacs.
She is joined by Pedro Porro on many of Novello’s love songs and his warm, rich voice adds much needed color to the ballads.
But it is Catherine Flye who has the most fun on stage. Her expressive face and voice are matched by Cramer’s; the two delight in using voice and gesture to gift wrap Novello’s lighter songs.
This quartet of engaging voices, plus the delightful accompaniment of Alex Hassan, makes an entertaining two hours of theater. They ably explain Novello’s view of theater: “I want to give people the chance to dream againand I want to show them that .there is an art beyond the reach of mechanical devices and black and white shadows chasing each other round a white sheet.”
That’s worth remembering.
