He said he does not believe the North campaign is behind telephone calls that have tried to discourage Miller supporters from attending the convention. Noting that Virginia’s other Senator, John Warner, has become involved in the senate campaign, as have former governor Douglas Wilder and former attorney general Marshall Coleman, he said the calls could be coming from “maverick supporters” of any candidate. “I’m not saying it didn’t happen,” he said. “I’m saying it’s unlikely the North campaign is behind that.”
Former party chairman Walter Longyear said he also believes “North will get the nomination.” He said if a complete vote is taken Col. North will have between 57 and 59 percent of the votes. However, he said he believes that once it becomes apparent the North forces have the votes to prevail, “I expect Jim Miller will move for a vote by acclimation for North.”
He said he also believes local delegates are “pretty evenly split, maybe leaning a little toward Miller.”
He said he is expecting an exciting convention even though he does not believe there is much suspense about the outcome. He said the party is expecting 14,000 people at the convention, even more than attended last summer’s party nominating convention. He noted that last year there were 100 press passes
