Fifty years ago Nelson Revercomb, who had grown up at Revercombs Comer on Route 231 in Rappahannock County, was in England with the 843rd Aviation Engineering Battalion.
His was a noncombat unit building concrete runways for , bomber planes.
He was aware of the buildup to the Normandy invasion, but it would be nearly a month before before he went to France, and when he got there his unit was again building runways this time for fighter aircraft. These runways were made of sections of steel mesh linked together.
In all, he spent 13 months in England and theh 17 months in France, Belgium and Germany.
