The USAF Presidential Honor Guard was on hand for a drill team demo, and several students put on skits about the bad effects of drugs. > The day was unrelentingly hot, but people were well prepared for it. Captain Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department, who is the county’s DARE officer, brought along giant coolers filled with ice and 20 cases of sodas donated by Pepsi. There was plenty of cool water also available, for drinking and hosing off.
Many kids did, however, still have problems with the heat, and some spent time in rescue vehicles lying down and cooling off.
Three RCES students ended up at the Manassas Hospital but were released after a short time. Most overheating occurred while children were standing around waiting to board school buses to return home.
Capt. Brown said, “It was a wonderful, positive experience for all the kids.”
