But much of their criticisms have been leveled at each other. Miller says North is an untrustworthy charlatan who is using his Iran-Contra fame to buy a political seat; North says Miller is a member of the ruling elite who failed to contain consecutive budget deficits under Reagan.
Miller has received help from Reagan himself and several other former White House officials who questioned North’s integrity and fitness for the U.S. Senate. Republican U.S. Sen. John Warner said he will not back North as the party’s nominee.
Despite his popularity among conservatives, a number of recent polls show that a majority of voters hold negative opinions of North. Miller is shown beating Robb in some polls.
The winner of the convention will soon face his Democratic opponent, to be picked by the voters in a special primary June 14. Incumbent U.S. Senator Charles Robb is being challenged by state Sen. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount and Richmond attorney Silvia Clute.
