In spite of daily attacks from the media and his political foe, North, the embattled Iran-contra figure, appears to have enough support to win the nomination, according to party members and race experts.
“I see a much greater intensity out there for North’s candidacy rather than for Miller’s candidacy,” Mark Rozell, a political scientist with Mary Washington College, said. “Unless something happens, North will remain comfortably ahead.”
North, who has been planning for the 1994 GOP convention for the last two years, has built up a considerable and loyal following of conservative Christians, military veterans and gun activists. Much of his support is concentrated in the Shennandoah Valley and downstate, but recently he has made in-roads into Miller’s base of support — the suburbs.
