This constricted review period could easily lead to • oversights which leave the county short of its requirements : for this project. Indeed, critics have suggested that such an accelerated decision-making process is a favorite Disney • tactic. It places the responsible officials at a disadvantage, ; since they must make major decisions on short notice. ! For that reason alone, it seems reasonable to extend the ' review period by at least the amount of extra time which ; Disney apparently required to file the application.
If Disney underestimated the time needed to prepare the
application and was unable to meet a deadline to which it had ; previoulsy agreed, why should Prince William’s officials and : its residents pay the potential price of an inadequate review?
Even if most of the points have been discussed during the on; going negotiations, many of the elements are interdependent ! and this is the first time they have appeared as a package. • This is a huge project, one which has mammoth ; implications for the future growth of not only western Prince ‘ William, but the surrounding areas as well. It deserves
intense scrutiny —- scrutiny which Disney officials say they ; welcome. It therefore seems appropriate to extend the i county agencies’ comment period, and perhaps the entire : review process and rezoning timetable, by whatever length of ; time it takes to ensure that the application is properly and ; adequately reviewed.
