It is nearly impossible to determine the extent to which Rappahannock orchardists and their employees have been exposed to chlordimeform, the pesticide used in Galecron and Fundal.
According to Mike Weaver of Virginia Tech the insecticide, which was used against mites, was recommended for use on cotton and orchard fruits from 1968 to 1977 and on cotton only from 1978 to 1988 when it was withdrawn from the market.
Last week ads were purchased in the largest circulation newspapers in all counties in the 48 contiguous states, including the Rappahannock News, to inform workers exposed to Galecron on the job of a settlement agreed to by Galecron manufacturer Ciba-Geigy in a class action suit brought in U.S. District Court in Alabama.
Workers who were exposed can remain parties to the suit by doing nothing or may actively participate in health screening and treatment if the settlement is approved by the court. Workers who do not wish to participate in the class action must specifically opt out of the settlement by mailing a request for exclusion to the Clerk of the Court in Ala
