the drill to form the mortise (the hole in the log into which the tenon fits), a chisel was used to get the exact size needed.
The logs were built up from the floor, with the back side of the cabin being the actual wall of the bam. At CCLC, the wall of the building is the fourth wall of the cabin. The cabin is open on top and has a door and a window. It has no chinking, to allow more ligty into the cabin and to allow the children to be seen at all times.
