The one-handgun-per-30-day law ' that went into effect July 1, 1993, is one of several pieces of legislation passed by the 1993 Virginia General ‘'Assembly to strengthen public 'safety.
“A year later, we’re finding that some potential gun purchasers still are not aware of this law,” said Col. "M. Wayne Huggins, State Police Superintendent. “In addition, the law frequently is erroneously referred to as the ‘one handgun-a-month-law,’ which has caused some confusion,” he added.
The legislation was designed to take direct aim at gunrunners pur' chasing weapons in Virginia with the ’ intention of transporting them ‘ within and without the state for Criminal purposes.
The year-old law permits gun buyers to purchase one handgun ev’eTy 30 days. Names of purchasers ' and the date a gun is purchased are recorded in a State Police calendar data base to ensure that 30 full days
