Ron L. Llewellyn, of Dumfries, called the approval “a giant step in the right direction.”
Commission chairman Gregory J. Gorgone admitted that, on balance more issues were decided in Disney’s favor, “but it was a negotiating process, and we did the best we could.” On several issues of health, safety and welfare, “especially annexation,” the county’s residents were protected, Gorgone said.
Gorgone also called Disney’s agreement to a one-year review of its special use permit for fireworks “a victory,” although the county conceded its original goal for a one-year renewal of the permit, which might have allowed it to be revoked.
Clearly disappointed by the planners’ near-unanimous recommendation, PROTECT PW charged this week that Disney’s project will “impose massive additional taxpayer costs” for the government services demanded by the seasonal, lowwage workers the park will employ.
