A recent “Opinion” item in the Rappahannock News praised Canada’s socialized health care system and critized opponents as either “monied special interests” or “political idealogues.” Interesting, if not particularly relevant.
Not surprisingly, nationalized medicine’s supporters did not mention the key lesson of history: there has not been a single instance over the centuries, after thousands of attempts, of a lasting successful socialist economy: Faced with that, and with recent evidence—the gradual deterioration of every socialized medical system—proponents are reduced to name calling.
Do not be misled by the excitement of change. Recall that in their early days recent socialist regimes dre\tfvpraise frojp-'some intellectuals and metfiSr Row refreshing the enthusiasm and dedication of Lenin’s revolutionary Russia! The trains now run on time in Mussolini’s Italy! Everyone is put to work and a renewed pride fills Hitler’s Germany!
The Canadian and Clintons’ health care plan do not socialize the entire economy. Both, however, make a major start. Once government’s hands are in control, which would inevitably occur, they can only tighten their grip. The longer that lasts, the worse the results. Recall America’s War on Poverty?
