American Farmland Trust announced a major, nationwide effort to generate greater support and public recognition for the need to protect the country’s best and most productive farmland from development and adverse environmental impacts. AFT is a national farmland conservation group based in Washington.

Formally titled “The Campaign For America’s Farmland,” AFT’s drive was announced a special dinner Saturday evening for approximately 150 guests at the historic Decatur House in Washington. Five prominent chefs from the country’s mid-Atlantic region created the menu for the evening with food and wine supplied by area farmers and wine producers. The chefs became involved to underscore their commitment to farmland protection and demonstrate the important connection between food and the nation’s fertile, but increasingly threatened agricultural base.

At the dinner, the private nonprofit membership group told supporters that under the motto of “Help Us Save The Land That Feeds America,” it is undertaking the unprecedented Campaign in response to what it termed the growing threat to the nation’s farmland. Close to 1.5 million acres of productive farmland, or some three acres a minute, are now being lost to nonfarm development along with the associated food and fiber production, wildlife habitat, hunting and fishing opportunities, wetlands and scenic open space.
