There have been several front" page articles throughout Northern Virginia about Disney exhuberence i over the Prince William County Planning Commission seven to one decision for the Disney Urban Development. As Chris Miller of PE£ noted, “It came as no surprise to opponents of the project,” just as the Prince William County Board of Supervisors’ forthcoming approval is considered a “done deal.”
The stories using Henry Merkli as a typical Disney Corporation supporter from Haymarket being “red faced and wide eyed” and shouting “we won, we won, etc.” are extremely misleading. Since the Merkli family own^ Silver Lake a 318-acre property in the middle of the Disney site and has a contract to sell it to Disney for $4.5 million if the project is approved, one can understand Merkli’s exhuberance. Silver Lake Associates of which Merkli is a general partner is a signator on the Disney Corporation rezoning application. Certainly no citizen of the area has been more faithful than Henry in attending every meeting about the Disney Corporation and expressing his undying support. Of course, as in the case of all other Disney Corporation supporters, what’s in it for him is not mentioned.
