Members of the Planning Commission voted 5 to 1 to recommend the Board of Supervisors adopt the amendment to the Zoning Ordinance banning the land application of sludge in all zoning categories.
Wakefield District representative Werner Krebser was the only member who voted against the ban. He said there is “no evidence” land application of sludge in Fauquier County has had “health consequences.”
He noted that the schools, Sperryville and the Aileen plant produce sludge and said Washington will have to have a plant soon. He said the planners had approved a general commercial area “where we know the soils don’t perk...Ultimately we will need a sewer system in that area. What happens if adjacent counties will not accept septage from Rappahannock County?” he asked. “We have the B&B businesses because of the farmers here. It’s undermining the farmer not to allow him to farm in the way he sees as feasible.”
